Wraparound Care

What is wraparound childcare?

Wraparound childcare is before and after school childcare for primary school aged children. This was previously known as breakfast and after school clubs. This care should be available every school day outside of regular school hours e.g. from 8 to 9am or 3:30 to 6pm during term time. Wraparound is generally run on a school site but other childcare providers such as childminders can also offer wraparound care.

How much will wraparound care cost me?

There are no eligibility criteria for accessing a wraparound childcare place, but the service is chargeable. Providers will set their own fees, so prices will vary. Parents will pay their wraparound childcare provider directly or via their child's school payment system.

You may be able to get help for childcare costs with the following government schemes:

What if wraparound care is not available in my area?

If wraparound childcare is not available, parents in England have the right to ask their child’s school to consider providing wraparound or holiday childcare. This applies to children up to age 14, or up to 18 for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Requests should be made in writing (such as by email or letter) and should include details about the childcare needed, the age of the child, any additional needs, and the times or days required.
After receiving a request, the school will notify the local authority, which may contact you to discuss existing childcare options in the area. The school may also gather information from other parents before making a decision.
The school should respond within one school term, explaining their decision and any next steps. If they decide not to provide childcare, they should signpost you to other local childcare options, such as the local authority’s wraparound childcare lead or the Family Information Service.
